The study examines the influence of print media reception on selected indicators of individual life opportunities and societal participation among young adults. Within a quasi-experimental design, trainees were surveyed twice over the course of a year on the following areas: general knowledge, language and reading skills, interest in political, economic, and social issues, perception of politics and society, as well as mass media and interpersonal communication. Additionally, regular interviews were conducted regarding the current reporting of their local newspaper. Compared to a control group, significant gains in knowledge, improvements in language and spelling skills, an expansion of interests, and an increase in mass media and interpersonal communication were observed. At the same time, there is also a growing critical perspective on politics and society.
