The physiology of the skin, the boundary and intermediary organ between the body and the environment, has always attracted interest far beyond the circle of physiologists and dermatologists. It has been 33 and 35 years since the still fundamentally important contributions "Physiology of the Skin" by v. Frey and Rein, as well as the presentation of the "Chemistry of the Skin" by Rothman and Schaaf, and the comprehensive hair chapter by F. Pinkus. If the adequate representation of the advances of the last three decades will take up about three times the space as the aforementioned contributions in the Jadassohn work, this reflects the broad development of skin physiological research during the mentioned period, especially in the last decade. The causes of this development are certainly heterogeneous: Firstly, it is the more or less stimulating measures affecting every branch of physiology.
