Humans are justificatory beings; they orient themselves based on reasons. The rules and institutions they adhere to are based on historically developed justification narratives and together form a tense and dynamic normative order. Beyond the traditional alternative of ideal and realistic theories, Rainer Forst demonstrates in this book how closely the concepts of normativity and power are intertwined: power relies on the ability to influence, determine, and potentially close the space of justifications for others. Therefore, a critical theory of justification must interrogate power relations regarding their justifications and think about just orders from that perspective.
