Product details

In 26 stories, the author provides unusual insights into the diverse Jewish scene of contemporary Geneva, a blend of memories and hopes, of imagination and historical reality. With a touch of humor, various characters are portrayed, and extraordinary events are recounted, all representing a piece of Jewish identity. The central setting is the café "Moule à Gâteau" in the Champel district of Geneva. Its regular patrons include active builders, former diamond dealers, retirees from distant lands, stranded desperados, unabashed daydreamers, seasoned art dealers, impatient art critics, survivors of Nazi crimes, aspiring Israeli generals, and reluctant snake enthusiasts. They are all lovingly and mischievously depicted. Through his keen observations, the author also guides the reader through the flea market in Plainpalais, where he searches for Judaica among the clutter of dissolved households and buys them to bury used prayer books according to Jewish customs in the cemetery of Veyrier. He describes why it can be impossible to buy kosher meat from the kosher butcher and carp from the Jewish fishmonger. And how, belonging to the Ashkenazi minority, it is not always easy to thrive in a Sephardic majority.
