This open-access book consolidates technical, economic, medical, and ethical reflections on care robots. Care robots, which are mostly still prototypes at the moment, support or replace human caregivers or attendants. They deliver necessary medications and food to the sick and elderly, assist with lying down and getting up, or alert emergency services. The advantages of care robots include continuous usability and consistent quality of service. Disadvantages include high costs (with potential amortization) and the complexity of requirements. Under the scientific leadership of Prof. Dr. Oliver Bendel, representatives from various scientific disciplines met in September 2017 as part of a Ladenburg discourse organized by the Daimler and Benz Foundation to discuss the current and future use of care robots and to explore research perspectives.
