First published in Kinder-Mährchen by E.W. Contessa and E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816. This is a complete new edition with a biography of the author, published by Karl-Maria Guth in Berlin in 2015. The text is based on the edition E.T.A. Hoffmann: Poetische Werke in sechs Bänden, Band 3, Berlin: Aufbau, 1963. The pagination of the above edition is included in this new edition as a marginal note, line by line.

About the author: Baptized in 1776 in Königsberg with the first names Ernst Theodor Wilhelm, he later called himself Ernst Theodor Amadeus, or shortly E.T.A. Hoffmann, out of veneration for Mozart. He studied law in Königsberg and became a trainee at the Berlin Court of Appeal.
