The occupational pension system in Switzerland enjoys international recognition. However, the socio-economic environment has changed significantly since the introduction of the mandatory scheme in 1985. The individualization of society, the aging population, and lower returns in the capital markets present important challenges for the social system. The legal foundations have only partially kept pace with this development. The authors pursue several reform approaches. They advocate for greater flexibility for employees, sustainable financing of pension institutions through realistic technical parameters, and a simplification of the BVG regulation to ensure the acceptance and suitability of the occupational pension system.
