Advancements in medicine and the increasing life expectancy present new challenges for all of us in dealing with people in the final stages of life. Most of us know or have had contact with individuals who have a life-threatening illness. Therefore, it is all the more necessary for us to address the topic of palliative care. How can occupational therapy help maintain the quality of life for seriously ill and dying individuals? How can we achieve individual functional ability despite declining capacities? How can we respond to the need for rest and relaxation? How can we address individual concerns (shortness of breath, fatigue, anxiety, pain)?
