"Hitler must fall for Germany to live!" Of the more than three million Wehrmacht soldiers who fell into Soviet captivity between 1941 and 1945, more than a million died. Heinrich Gerlach survived. He processed the horror of Stalingrad in a novel, and he describes his seemingly endless journey through Soviet labor and prisoner camps in his autobiographical account "Odyssey in Red." In the Lunjowo camp, Gerlach was also a founding member of the Federation of German Officers (BDO), an association of captured Wehrmacht officers who, starting in 1943, called for German soldiers to desert and fight against Hitler—under forced collaboration with exiled communists such as Wilhelm Pieck, Walter Ulbricht, and Erich Weinert. In 1944, a treason case was initiated against Gerlach in absentia in Nazi Germany.
