In conservation, "monitoring" is usually understood as a type of "early warning system" for the preservation condition of various monuments. Archaeological monuments require monitoring just as much as architectural and artistic monuments. Establishing comprehensible foundations remains the primary concern in monitoring processes. This issue of the ÖZKD describes the monitoring of free-standing archaeological monuments "in wind and weather," as well as landscape formations, buildings, prehistoric salt mines, and extends to the monitoring of graves and underwater monuments.
