Product details

On April 3 and 4, 1945, the Thuringian town of Nordhausen was bombed by the British Royal Air Force, resulting in significant destruction. During these air raids, several thousand people lost their lives, including a large number of prisoners from an external camp of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp located in the city. How does a city remember its destruction just before the end of World War II? Who are the actors that keep this culture of remembrance alive? What roles did commemoration play during the final phase of the war, the American and Soviet occupation, the GDR dictatorship, and the Cold War, up to the recent memory boom since the mid-1990s? Historian Martin C. Winter addresses these and other questions in his study of 60 years of public remembrance of the air war in Nordhausen.
