Fabian Endres links micro-analytical attitude research with macro-societal differences to achieve a better understanding of European foreign and security policy fundamental beliefs. Using attitudes towards important foreign policy institutions, events, and developments from recent history, the author illustrates the significance of strategic culture on the impact of the three beliefs: multilateralism, militarism, and internationalism among the populations of Germany, France, and Britain. In particular, the contrast between an Atlantic and a European orientation of strategic culture is reflected in the multilateral and internationalist fundamental beliefs in the three countries.
