The study focuses on Schleiermacher's political engagement throughout all phases of his work. Based on a broad, partly newly explored source base, it examines his political sermons, activities in educational and higher education policy, his theoretical conceptions of the state, his involvement in politically journalistic activities within the framework of the Prussian Reform Party, and his judgments regarding Judaism and Jewish culture. With his political design, which has received little attention in recent research, Schleiermacher emerges as a proponent of a liberal civic society.
