Hatfield, a hunter and trapper, was also a poet - the last real trapper of Alaska. No off-road vehicles or snowmobiles were available for him, but skis and pack sleds, snowshoes and moccasins. He lived alone, sometimes suffered from loneliness, earned his living with great effort - a miserable and often cruel drudgery.
