German, Boris von Brauchitsch, 2017Product details
Racing bikes, cargo bikes or tandems, shabby bikes and sleek luxury bikes: bicycles were and are available for every taste and almost every use. A hundred years ago, people already rode their bicycles out into the countryside, to work or as soldiers to the front. The baker's and newspaper boys supplied their customers by bicycle and the war-disabled remained mobile on three wheels. The historical image of Berlin is hardly imaginable without bicycles. They are the epitome of mobility and individual locomotion. And even women were already demonstrating their independence around 1900 by cycling their own way. "Berlin without an engine" brings together around 100 photographs from a world of locomotion in which there seem to be almost no limits to inventiveness. A ride on two wheels through Berlin's history.
