The responsible compilation of a dictionary requires strict adherence to the underlying philological and historical principles, a strong commitment to the textual tradition, and consideration of the ongoing research developments. The dictionary, first published in 1969, has followed these principles and has provided significant impetus for the study of Old High German. Since the fifth edition, the dictionary has included the most important scholarly works relevant to Old High German texts. In the vocabulary offered in this edition, numerous additions from various texts are incorporated, particularly from the oldest Williram tradition, as well as from smaller texts that have not received sufficient attention until now. Necessary corrections and improvements have been made once again.
