Abstract: Upon first reading, I particularly noticed that it is a poetic text that uses expressive imagery, such as the bruised reed and the smoldering wick. The content of the text does not reveal its message so easily: Who is speaking to whom? Who is meant by the servant, and what exactly is his task? What right is being referred to, and what does the covenant mean? From verse 5 onwards, it becomes clear that it concerns the God of Israel, the Creator God, who protects His servant, the only God, omnipotent and omniscient. The Book of Isaiah is related to the Babylonian exile. Many texts from it are read during Christmas. The first Servant Song is assigned in the lectionary to the first Sunday after Epiphany.
