Nuno Oliveira is regarded as one of the leading figures in equestrian art of the 20th century. He was not only an expert in this discipline and its history but also an outstanding teacher and mentor, a trainer with exceptional intelligence and highly developed equestrian sensitivity, an unparalleled artist in the saddle. His great genius lay in the comprehensive synthesis of the two pioneering yet previously opposing schools of the old French riding masters de la Guérinière (18th century) and Baucher (19th century). What particularly distinguished him was his unwavering, unbiased pragmatism, which allowed him to find the best method from all schools for working towards a specific goal with a particular horse at a given moment.
He believed that each individual horse must be trained to the highest perfection and brilliance within its own capabilities. He rose above any disputes of doctrines and focused on the task at hand. A rider should not only ride but also observe, study, read, and reflect deeply. They should proceed rationally and calmly, never acting brutally or with force; they should possess a love for the horse and develop a great equestrian feeling, the virtue of all virtues.
To achieve this, he taught with Beudant and de Kerbrech: "Ask often, be content with little, and reward much."
For the first time, the collected writings of Maître Nuno Oliveira are now made accessible to German-speaking readers in a single volume. A must-have for riders and lovers of fine riding and classical equestrian art.
