The person is only a person by being simultaneously pre-personal, yet brings something unpredictably new: their ability for self-determination through self-attribution as a case of multiple kinds. With their breakthrough from captivity in situations, the world emerges as a response to human address through sentence-like speech that draws from situations. This dual aspect of anchoring and new formation in epigenesis is explored in the book through various themes. These include, among others, closeness and distance, body and bodily communication, addiction, intentionality, history, and practice. In the end, there is a reflection on the West. Ancient philosophy with the division of world and humanity, medieval Christianity with the binding of affective involvement to power as a central theme, and modernity with its blindness to situations and bodily communication.
