The story of a unique complex of care, treatment, and research facilities built over the course of about a century in the northern part of Berlin, specifically in the district of Buch in Pankow, is told. The oldest facilities were established during the Imperial era based on plans by Ludwig Hoffmann and are therefore protected as historical monuments. Significant social upheavals have repeatedly changed their structures and functions. This began with the revolution of 1918, continued with the rise of the Nazi dictatorship, occurred during the liberation of Berlin and its division, was shaped by the socialist health policy of the GDR, and finally underwent processes of dismantling and redefinition after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. It is the story of a location closely surrounded by care institutions, hospitals, and research institutes.
