A search for our roots in the chaos of the present: Unknown clay tablets containing legends of Genesis have been found in the Persian Gulf. To study these, David Ostrich, an Orientalist from Toronto, receives an unusual assignment from Thaut, the head of a massive dam construction project: Ostrich is to track down Thaut's missing daughter. He begins to interrogate the enigmatic residents of the small port town and gradually uncovers a secret that binds the fragile desert state, which is massively threatened from the outside. However, this knowledge proves useless to him, as he risks becoming a victim of the local power struggles—and his own arrogance.
