The opera has been one of the most stable cultural institutions in Europe for four hundred years. Neither revolutions nor economic crises have changed that. In the 19th century, opera finally becomes an international phenomenon. The institution of opera includes not only the stage performances and everything necessary for their organization, but also the singers and, last but not least, the audience. This book examines the Italian impresario system, traveling theater troupes, municipal theaters, court and state theaters, as well as the travel conditions and fees of the singers, ticket prices, and the hierarchy of boxes in the opera, along with the legal aspects of opera operations. The scope spans from the 17th century to contemporary developments.
