In everyday life, both alongside and after school, history primarily encounters young people in the form of numerous small and larger narratives about the past. These stories circulate within families and friend circles, often linked to mementos and places of memory, as documentaries on television, or as personal accounts on the internet. What is conveyed at this level often has a much greater influence on historical perceptions than the official history found in textbooks. This volume aims to demonstrate how forms of oral tradition can be more strongly and consciously integrated into history education than has been done so far. It focuses on the active and direct conduct of interviews and discussions with eyewitnesses by students. At the same time, it also shows how to handle eyewitness statements that have not been personally solicited in the classroom.
