A young woman makes a living by posing as a cheap fortune teller while also engaging in some illegal softcore sex work on the side. She earns a decent income, primarily by telling people what they want to hear. However, she then encounters Susan Burke. Susan moved to the city a year ago with her husband and her 15-year-old stepson Miles. They live in a Victorian house called Carterhook Manor. Susan is convinced that a malevolent spirit inhabits her home. The young woman does not believe in exorcism or the supernatural. But when she enters the house for the first time, she too begins to feel as if the house is watching her, waiting, biding its time.
