Product details

For over 30 years, the classic of the Afro-German movement in Germany. "But you speak German well," they are told. "Where do you come from?" they are asked. And they are finally comforted with the words: "You're not that black." Everyday racism to which they are exposed: The Afro-German women who speak here often feel foreign in their own country. They were born and raised here, as children of black fathers and white mothers. They were referred to as "mixed-race" or "occupation children," and today they are often called "people of color." They are Germans yet are treated like foreigners, marginalized, and at best seen as exotic. With their book, the authors sought to explore their history, reveal the societal contexts of racism, and draw attention to their unique situation. A situation that has intensified in light of increasing racist attacks and xenophobia. With a new preface by Katharina Oguntoye. "Color Confession was a beginning and remains a current handbook for understanding Afro-German realities as well as a useful tool for networking and education." Katharina Oguntoye: "Although we live in isolation and our skin color is seen as an exception in Germany, there are many of us. We grew up in some German city, we work and live alongside white Germans - and yet we are regarded as the always different in this very Germany..." Katharina Oguntoye: "Isolation means being invisible, easily overlooked, having to fight alone. It took a long time to recognize this, but we have decided to confess our color." May Ayim.
