In 1921, Oskar Schlemmer answered the call of Walter Gropius to join the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar. As a master of form, Schlemmer temporarily took on the artistic direction of the Bauhaus workshops for wall painting, wood and stone sculpture, and metalwork, as well as the stage workshop. For Schlemmer, stage art at the Bauhaus was of central importance alongside figure drawing, wall painting, and sculpture.
