Oskar Schlemmer perceives the Bauhaus in Weimar from a distance in 1919, while he is in Stuttgart at that time. He writes to his fellow artist Otto Meyer-Amden on June 3, 1919: "Today I received an issue of Der Austausch, published by the students of the Bauhaus in Weimar, in which a delightfully sharp self-critique is exercised; life will undoubtedly emerge in Weimar." In July of the following year, a trip takes him through Weimar as well. Gropius invites him to come to the Bauhaus and offers him his own studio. It takes some time for Schlemmer to make a decision. In November 1920, he is still hesitating: "Weimar, - Bauhaus. Gropius is urgently inviting me to come. [...] What to do?" But by the end of the month, he writes from Weimar to his wife Tut: "I have settled in at the Hotel Zum Elefanten. Yes, but let's get to the point. Things are looking good for the Bauhaus! Today.".
