Product details

The present study examines the reception of Paracelsianism in the Ottoman Empire of the 17th century. The focus of the work is the exploration of the Arabic translations of Oswaldus Crollius' Basilica Chymica and Daniel Sennert's De Chymicorum cum Aristotelicis et Galenicis consensu ac dissensu (al-K miy al-malakiyya and at-Tibb al-k miy i al-dschad). These translations are attributed to the chief physician Ibn Sallum al-Halabi, who is considered a reformer of medicine in the Ottoman Empire and is said to have introduced the Orient to new diseases, Paracelsianism, and the Nova medicina through his work. However, this study demonstrates that Ibn Sallum cannot be regarded as a translator of the aforementioned texts, and the reception of Paracelsus cannot be traced back to him. Rather, the investigation of his works and the sources in their context reveals that Ibn Sallum is a pragmatic eclectic.
