The two heroic tales "Otnit" and "Wolf Dietrich," originally preserved in the Ambraser Heldenbuch from the early 16th century, are intricately intertwined: In "Otnit," the hero dies after successfully courting his bride in a battle against dragons, thus he cannot complete his final adventure. Wolf Dietrich, at the end of his story, kills the very dragons that Otnit had failed to defeat, and he marries Otnit's widow. Is this one story, or are there two? Even the authors, compilers, and scribes of the many different versions of both tales had differing opinions and established various connections.
