At a time when the deadly border strip still divided Germany, people from both sides come together in a small town in Saxony. They mourn Paul, the worldly-wise, cunning old man who knew how to balance East and West with moderation. However, the memorial service, initially carefully shielded by both sides as a place of harmony and reverence, suddenly turns into an arena. Decades of hidden feelings, suppressed accusations, and grievances break free. It becomes evident how closely personal shortcomings are intertwined with the dominance of the two competing systems in Germany. On the evening of that clear August day, when decades of German-German history become visible as if through a magnifying glass, everyone feels deceived and betrayed: those from the West, concerned about their belonging to this piece of land near Dresden, and those from the East.
