As the commitment and necessity for adequate pain therapy increasingly come into focus for both caregivers and patients, this work serves as a practical foundation for a better understanding of pain mechanisms. It will thus contribute to the improvement of pain therapy. In particular, nursing staff require extensive competence regarding pain measurement, (side) effects and dosage of pain medications, the application of non-pharmacological methods for pain relief, pain prevention, and counseling.
