Thesy Teplitzky has repeatedly demonstrated how she can bring history to life in an engaging way through portrait painting. Her new picture book is a continuation of the Cologne portraits from the late Middle Ages to the Romantic period. This time, a posthumous portrait of the famous Queen Louise of Prussia serves as the introduction. The focus is on the 20th century: in Cologne portraits from Historicism to Pop Art, portraits are primarily presented that are connected to the history of the Cologne Museum. Thus, the reader encounters the entrepreneur Carl Joest, the art collector Josef Haubrich, the patron Lilly von Schnitzler, and the industrialist Peter Ludwig. Among the artists, great names such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Ernst, Max Beckmann, George Grosz, Otto Dix, and Picasso are featured. The concluding chapter addresses the dominance of American Pop Art: in the representations of Andy Warhol, Teplitzky sees the current end of portrait art.
