Information about the author
Johanna Louise Spyri was born on June 12, 1827, in Hirzel, Switzerland. She was the daughter of a country doctor and had five siblings. The family later moved to Zurich, where young Johanna attended school and studied languages and piano. In 1852, she married the lawyer Bernhard Spyri, with whom she had a son, Bernard, born in 1855. Johanna began writing seriously in 1871, with many of her stories often reflecting the idyllic Swiss landscape of her childhood. Her beloved children's novel Heidi was published in 1881 and is considered one of the best-selling books of all time. After the tragic death of her husband and child in 1884, Spyri devoted herself to writing and charitable work, completing over fifty additional stories before she passed away on July 7, 1901, in Zurich.
