Gilles - the "Asterix of the Netherlands." This is certainly a grand statement, but it captures the essence quite well: The comic tells the story of the Dutch uprising against the Spanish occupiers during the Eighty Years' War (1568 to 1648) through the titular character Gilles. A small group of rebels stands out in particular: the Geuzen. A wild crew of nobles and rogues who make life difficult for the Spanish conquerors wherever they can. Through their unorthodox methods, they earn a special reputation and are considered invincible. Hanco Kolk and Peter de Wit created this national hero in the historical funny series Gilles the Rogue, paying tribute to him. Gilles is strong, vain, and utterly incompetent. However, through a series of unfortunate circumstances, he becomes the leader of a revolutionary squad. A combination of physical strength, a love for fighting, moral flexibility, and outrageous stupidity, paired with a great deal of luck, allows the group to stumble from victory to victory. The insane adventures of Gilles made the series one of the most popular comic series in the Netherlands from the 1980s until its end in 2003.
