Pacifist, socialist, Jewish, and intellectual - just one of these attributes was enough during the Weimar Republic to be declared a political enemy by the nationalistic right. Emil Julius Gumbel, a professor of mathematics in Heidelberg, embodied all of this. Moreover, he confronted in his writings the murder gangs and coup plotters, the paramilitary groups and secret societies, the "Black Reichswehr," and the femicides; but also a judiciary that covered up all their crimes and atrocities and generally prevented the punishment of the perpetrators. The consequence: even before the so-called seizure of power, Gumbel was expelled from the university by a phalanx of corporate and Nazi students as well as right-wing professors. Dietrich Heither recalls a democrat who had the courage to confront the murderers from the right and their accomplices.
