Shortly after his adventurous escape from the Dachau concentration camp in May 1933, the severely tortured Bavarian communist and Reichstag member Hans Beimler wrote down what he had to endure there. The publication was a sensation, translated into several languages, cited in international newspapers, and illegally distributed in Germany. Hans Beimler aimed to call for resistance against the Nazi dictatorship in Germany and abroad with his report. Initially, he carried out illegal work from France, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland before going to Spain with the first volunteers to fight against Franco with the International Brigades. Hans Beimler fell near Madrid on December 1, 1936. For the first time in the Federal Republic, his account of experiences appears in its original version, supplemented by photos and documents as well as notes.
