The painter Ayax Mazyrka, one of the most significant figures in art history, never existed. His works are forgeries, and the story of his life is a fiction. At the tender age of five, Anton Velhagen begins his career as a forger. He accidentally destroys a miniature of the Prague garbage dump and quickly replaces the work with ashes from the fireplace. The boy's role model is his uncle Robert Guiscard, the "King of Forgers," who frequently visits his sister's house, Anton's foster mother. Guiscard not only invents the baroque painter Ayax Mazyrka along with his works but also perfects his forgery and even concocts an art historian who wrote the painter's biography. Even the forger's own family is not safe from his deception. Monika Aichele achieves a delightful and quirky feat: with her collection, she invents.
