Product details

The fashion magazines of the late 18th and early 19th centuries promised their broad audience the transmission of lifestyle and taste. In contemporary understanding, taste formation affected both the individual and the community. It also had economic significance; the magazines aimed to promote trade. They were oriented towards the models designed in Paris and London. Nevertheless, they propagated a national taste. This illustrates how deeply the national idea was rooted. Numerous articles specifically addressed female readers, focusing on the relationship between the genders. Following a comparative approach, mixed fashion magazines from England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy were examined.
