Product details

The sphere of the sacred can only be understood by incorporating different research disciplines and unusual conceptual tools. In the form of sacred architecture, it represented for centuries the highest of all architectural genres, uniting all the arts within it. However, the functional differentiation of secularized culture has pushed the sacred into the background. This book attempts to make the sacred tangible in the profane architecture of the present. Like an optical prism, it allows a wide spectrum of disciplines to speak, including not only the history and theory of architecture but also anthropology, theology, philosophy, and, last but not least, cognitive research. Following an introductory genealogy and reflections on the sacred in the work of the significant church builder Rudolf Schwarz (1897-1961), three symptomatic profane buildings are examined.
