Smarch - Mathys & Stücheli Architects are among the important, internationally recognized architects of the middle generation in Switzerland, known for their unconventional buildings and projects, as well as their teaching at ETH Zurich. Their designs have been published in magazines and books both domestically and abroad, but this book is the first monograph. In their work, Beat Mathys and Ursula Stücheli focus on different scales and operate within thematic areas that they understand as the 'four elements of the city': infrastructure, city and landscape, habitat, monument. These four categories structure the book and serve to categorize the selected designs. The objects are presented with plans, photos, brief descriptions, and excerpts from reviews by prominent authors. Essays introduce the respective thematic areas and contextualize them.
