Product details

Large structures are a striking architectural legacy of the second half of the 20th century and have always been highly controversial. Complexes such as the Ruhr University Bochum, the Aachen University Hospital, or the Nordwestzentrum Frankfurt continue to divide opinions to this day. However, the belief in the grand is a constitutive element in the architecture of modern societies. Large housing estates, shopping centers, universities for thousands of students, conference centers, or hospitals around the world testify to this as typical construction tasks. The buildings were designed to be as large as entire cities and were intended to function as efficiently as machines. Three dominant concepts for these giants emerged: large form, building system, and megastructure. This new book systematically presents the theoretical discourse surrounding large structures for the first time. It opens up new perspectives for dealing with them.
