What does beauty have to do with psychotherapy? More than it may seem at first glance. As long as the beautiful is freed from centuries of aesthetic constriction and seen in its entirety, especially in its ethical implications. The author undertakes this exploration in reference to philosophers such as Heidegger, Nietzsche, Martin Seel, and Günther Pöltner. A specific serenity serves as a common thread through various therapeutically relevant forms of beauty: not mere laissez-faire, nor an otherworldly retreat into "beautiful appearances," but rather an active letting-be and bringing-to-light. This peculiar activity characterizes both aesthetic perception and artistic creation, as well as - in a certain sense even more fundamentally - the interpersonal-therapeutic relationship, which represents a fundamental factor in most therapies.
