Product details

Magritte's mother takes her own life in 1912, an event that will become a recurring motif in his paintings. The young man has not chosen an easy path with painting. Magritte works as a pattern designer in a wallpaper factory, later as a poster designer – by then, he has already started a family with Georgette, who is two years younger than him. It is only when he signs a contract with the "Le Centaure" gallery that he can fully dedicate himself to art. During this time, he also creates his first surrealist painting: "The Lost Jockey." Magritte befriends André Breton, Joan Miró, Hans Arp, and later Salvador Dalí, although there are frequent disputes and falling outs. In 1947, Magritte exhibits in New York for the first time, and in 1956 he wins the Guggenheim Prize for Belgium. Confronted with accusations of selling out his art, he passes away.
