Product details

Jazz in Germany once had a voice: Inge Brandenburg. Born in Leipzig and raised in difficult circumstances in Nazi Germany, she was accustomed to standing on her own from an early age. During the time of the German economic miracle, she suddenly became celebrated as the best European jazz singer, compared by Time magazine to Billie Holiday and carried by musicians on their shoulders. However, the German audience ignored the talent of this outstanding jazz artist, and the German recording industry unsuccessfully tried to reduce her to pop music. Marc Boettcher portrays in his moving biography a woman's fate in the 1950s and 60s. He recounts a time when there was no place in Germany for self-confident women with international dreams, dramatic interpretative styles, and an emancipated sensuality. The story of this career, which has lost none of its significance even in the age of casting shows and YouTube presence, was revived only through a sensational discovery at a flea market and the award-winning film portrait SING! INGE, SING! that emerged from it. This biography finally allows a wide readership to rediscover this great forgotten German artist.
