In April 1952, former communist prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp established a liaison committee, which has been known since the early 1960s as the "International Committee Buchenwald-Dora and Commandos" (IKBD). The committee continues to organize memorial events and addresses the public with statements. Topics include the treatment of Nazi perpetrators, the historiography of the camps, and the management of memorial sites. Throughout the period of Europe's division, it operated on both sides of the "Iron Curtain." Even during their imprisonment, the future protagonists of the committee began to mythologize their camp history. The "international solidarity" among the prisoners, the camp resistance organized under communist leadership, and the "Buchenwald Oath" taken shortly after liberation serve as legacies.
