Product details

In his examination of significant forms and debates in contemporary art, Jacques Rancière explores what is meant by political art or the politics of art. "Who sees does not understand how to see": This prejudice runs through our history, from Plato's cave to the critique of the society of the spectacle. Some use subtle explanations or spectacular installations to show the blind what they cannot see. Others aim to tackle the evil at its root, transforming the spectacle into action and the viewer into an actor. The studies gathered here present a simple hypothesis against these two strategies: Seeing does not imply any impairment; if one transforms those subjected to the constraints and hierarchies of action into spectators, it can help to disrupt societal positions.
