Product details

The volume "God, Death, and Time" contains Emmanuel Lévinas's last two lectures at the Sorbonne and presents his focused exploration of the thematic field of God, death, and time. In the first lecture on death and time, Lévinas engages in a nuanced reading of Heidegger, interspersed with excursions on Kant, Hegel, Bergson, and Bloch, tracing the intricate relationship between death and time and developing the idea of a death that inscribes itself into time: "Thinking of death starting from time and no longer thinking of time starting from death." The second lecture attempts to turn central ideas of Heidegger's diagnostics around: because philosophy, from its origin, has mixed God and being, it is not so much being that has been forgotten but rather God. Metaphysics under the rule of onto-theology has caused God to disappear.
