Wordsworth, the poet of the lakes, traverses the French Revolution, while Büchner encounters a pilgrim of the Saint-Simonian utopia. Michelet and Rilke dream of a reconciled life in the presence of a maid or a worker, while the proletarians dream of the South Seas and even embark on whale hunts there. On screen, Ingrid Bergman embodies the worldly woman who discovers the other side of society.
