The book highlights the works of three Romanian artists from three generations, who are among the most internationally renowned "artist-thinkers" (Deleuze). Three art historians and three philosophers focus on selected pieces from their rich oeuvre and attempt to interpret them through their own thinking. While Bratescu, Grigorescu, and Perjovschi differ greatly in their thoughts and works, and respond to the respective cultural and political situations in Romania, they share a unifying ability to open spaces for thought and thus venture into artistic new territory. In addition to the reception of European cultural and literary history, as well as the - albeit scant until 1989 - information on contemporary artistic developments in the West, it is primarily their own, keen observation of everyday life that informs their works.
