For Jacques Derrida, his role as a teacher was a lifelong source of his thinking and writing. The publication of his seminars offers readers the - in every sense of the word - unprecedented opportunity to engage with the spoken words of the philosopher. This volume includes the sessions from the second year of the seminar "The Animal and the Sovereign." It is Derrida's final seminar, held from the fall of 2001 to the spring of 2003 at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. It is structured in an original and fruitful way through two interconnected readings that are at times parallel and at times intersecting: In a sort of cross-examination between Daniel Defoe's novel "Robinson Crusoe" and Heidegger's lecture "The Basic Concepts of Metaphysics," Derrida develops his thoughts on sovereignty.
